Lewis and Clark National Historical Park invites everyone to participate in the 28th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) February 14 through 17.  In this worldwide citizen science opportunity, anyone can count wild birds anywhere on one or more days and enter their sightings at birdcount.org. The information gathered by tens of thousands of individuals helps track bird population changes on a massive scale. The GBBC is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, Birds Canada, and Wild Birds Unlimited.

Along with the actual bird count, the park will be sharing other bird-related activities.  A “Great Pink Heron Scavenger Hunt” will be on-going using the Netul Trail along the Lewis and Clark River.   A “Birds of Fort Clatsop” display may be viewed in the visitor center.  A variety of bird field guides and bird-themed items are available for purchase at the Fort Clatsop Bookstore operated by the Lewis & Clark National Park Association, the park’s non-profit education partner.

The weekend’s birding events at Fort Clatsop are sponsored by the Lewis & Clark National Park Association and the National Park Service. Get ready for a Roaring Good Time on Saturday, February 15, at the Heritage Museum, 16th and Exchange Streets. The “Black” door opens at 6:00, and gaming begins at 6:30.

The Clatsop County Historical Society’s annual Roaring 20s Speakeasy Casino Night promises a fun time for all. There will be games of Black Jack, Roulette, Craps, and (for an additional fee) Texas Hold ‘em poker—prizes for the top chip holders and the best 1920s costume.

Entry is $20 for an individual or just $30 for a couple. Get in on the action at the Texas Hold ‘em tournament for the additional buy-in of $30, $40, or $50; call for details and reserve your place at the table.

All proceeds support the Clatsop County Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of Clatsop County, Oregon, and the surrounding area. The Society operates the Flavel House Museum, the Heritage Museum, the Oregon Film Museum, and the Uppertown Firefighters Museum.
