This message is a part of our insider's perspective series offering a sneak peek into what those of us who are lucky to call this place home do on the daily.  Authored by Linh who shares: "Sammy is my 13-year-old pug who’s still very active and handsome. Astoria is our home and we are so lucky to live right on the riverwalk with views of the Columbia River and steps from Pier 39 and Coffee Girl."

Astoria & Warrenton are Paw-some!

There’s something magical about living in Astoria & Warrenton area of Oregon - especially when you share it with a furry companion like my lovable pug, Sammy. If you’ve ever wondered how to enjoy tail-wagging adventures and fun in the area, I hope this will inspire you for your next visit.

Take it Easy Pup: A Leisure Day in Astoria

There’s no better way to start the day than a leisurely walk along the Astoria Riverwalk. The 6-mile, scenic Riverwalk trail stretches along the city’s waterfront with shops, breweries, and museums. The Riverwalk is more than just a path to us; it’s our home. Sammy and I often take this walk side by side, Sammy’s little legs keep pace with mine, his curly tail bouncing with excitement at every new scent he encounters. But the real treat is when we hear the nostalgic clang-clang of the Astoria Riverfront Trolley, or “Old 300”. Sammy’s ears perk up, and he stops in his tracks, watching the bright red trolley roll by with its happy, smiling riders. The trolley goes straight along the river from Basin Street (west end) and 39th Street (east end). Then it turns around and goes back on the same route. You can ride for just $1 - bring cash - and board from any of the 12 shelters along the route. The trolley service generally begins in March and operates through October, weather permitting. It’s these simple, joyful encounters that make our walks so special.

Our next stop is Pier 39-Astoria, a spot that has become a part of our routine. Here, we explore shops and restaurants including my favorite shop Four Winds Canvas Works, where you can find locally made bags repurposed from old sails for a true one-of-a-kind find. There’s something heartwarming about supporting local artisans. No visit to Pier 39 is complete without a stop at Coffee Girl. This quaint café, perched at the end of the pier, offers the perfect spot to relax and take in the spectacular views of the Columbia River. I order my usual—a delicious cup of coffee paired with their fresh-baked pastries of the day—while Sammy enjoys his treat. We sit on the pier with the river stretching out before us, and simply enjoy the moment.

Active and Adventurous Dogs: Trails in Warrenton & Astoria

If your high-energy dog loves a bit of adventure, Astoria and Warrenton offer many opportunities to explore the great outdoors. We have a few favorite spots that cater to various activity levels, ensuring there’s something for every kind of pup. The trails at Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop are perfect for gentle hikes, with plenty of trails and a serene atmosphere. Sammy loves sniffing around the trees and chasing after squirrels, his little legs moving faster than I thought possible! For something a bit more exciting, head to Youngs River Falls. This hidden gem offers a breathtaking waterfall, and the short, but steep trail leading out to it is scenic and invigorating. As you and your dog approach the falls, the sound of rushing water grows louder with every step. The sight of the cascading water is nothing short of magical, making it a perfect spot to soak in the beauty of nature, especially in the fall with the stunning autumnal leaves. If you’re up for the challenge, the Cathedral Tree Trail is a rewarding adventure. This trail winds through the forest, leading up to the iconic Astoria Column. It’s a bit of a climb, but the reward is worth it—at the top, you’re greeted with the best view in all of Astoria. Sammy and I take our time, enjoying the journey as much as the destination. Once we reach the top, we pause to catch our breath and take in the panoramic view of the town below. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love living here.

Retail Therapy: Shopping Fun for Both Pups and People

After outdoor adventures, there’s nothing like a bit of retail therapy to round out the day. Downtown Astoria is a treasure trove of unique, boutique shops and art galleries, perfect for a leisurely afternoon of browsing. Sammy and I love wandering in and out of the shops, each one offering something different and special. And many with a bowl of water available for visiting pups. One of our favorite stops is Gulley’s Butcher Shop. Not only do they have an incredible selection of fresh meats for humans, but they also offer a fantastic range of dog treats. Inside, there’s a section dedicated to dog treats featuring everything from delicious bones to the ultimate indulgence—pig snouts! Sammy’s tail wags furiously as we pick out a few treats to take home. It’s safe to say that this is his favorite part of our shopping trips.
